The Dr. Benjamín F. Boyd (right) delivered the humane prize that carries its name al Dr. Rafael T. Cortez, during the session of opening of the pan-american Congress.

The Dr. Cortez of Caracas was selected for this honor due to its work in the promotion of the education oftalmológica in the countries in development, it q eu illustrates the humane spirit of the pan-american Association of Oftalmología, in agreement al Dr. Boyd.

The Humane prize is delivered each 2 years in the Congress of the APAO. The Dr. Boyd served as Executive Director of the APAO for 27 years consecutive and was its president for 2 years. Image: Stiglish JM.

Scanty fulfillment of the treatment in patients with glaucoma

The patients, who receive prostaglandins to control their intraocular pressure, present very low fulfillment levels of the treatment, as indicates the information of a study that was presented by the European Glaucoma Society.

Dra. Gail F. Schwartz, of the Parris-Castoro Eye and Laser Center, at Maryland ( United States), presented the results of an analysis of the pharmacological records over 2.503 patients with glaucoma. Of them, until the end of the follow-up, 477 (19 %) interrupted the initial treatment and resumed it for 180 days. Other 40 patients (2 %) interrupted the treatment while they were using the medicament and resumed it later with prostaglandin.

Of 1.986 remaining patients, 879 (35 %) supported medication until the end; 280 (11 %) interrupted the treatment of prostaglandin and changed it into another type of medicament, but 827 (33 %) did not resume again.
